What is SIBO?

Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth, or SIBO, is a chronic infection in the small intestine, and even though you might not have problems with digestion, it could be affecting your health. The small intestine is where you absorb most of your nutrients, making it central to your health. The small intestine is normally quite sterile, but when bacteria that normally live in the gastrointestinal tract colonize the small intestine and overgrow, it can cause a large array of problems.

Bacteria also play an important role in digestion. However, when bacteria live in the small intestine, they cause damage to the lining of the small intestine and interfere with digestion of the foods you eat and absorption of nutrients. Damage to the small intestine causes leaky gut, a condition that allows for the passing of waste products into the bloodstream, rather than passed through the intestines as waste.

Leaky gut triggers an immune response and is highly correlated with autoimmune conditions, allergies and sensitivities, nutrient deficiencies and disturbing gut symptoms.

You might think that if you have no problems with your digestion that SIBO is not a possibility for you. Unfortunately, SIBO has been linked to over 70 different conditions, as either a cause, co-condition, or effect of these conditions.

If you have any of these conditions, it is important that you are tested for SIBO and treated appropriately. This can have a profound affect on your overall health. I use a simple breath test and would love to help you regain your health. If you have any of the conditions on the list, please call me for a consult.
